Progressive Maryland

Progressive Maryland is a grassroots organization of more than 15,000 members and supporters as well as 40 affiliated religious, community, and labor organizations.  Through research, public education, and direct political action we strive to improve the lives of working families in Maryland.  MCEA is an affiliated member.  Together, we have advocated for living wages, immigrant rights, education funding, and tax fairness.  This website has current campaign information and ways to get involved.

National Board for Professional Teaching Standards

The National Board for Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS) advances the quality of teaching and learning by:

• Maintaining high and rigorous standards for what accomplished teachers should know and be able to to do
• Providing a national voluntary system certifying teachers who meet these standards
• Advocating related education reforms to integrate National Board Certification in American education and to capitalize on the expertise of National Board Certified Teachers

Since 1987 more than 55,000 teachers have achieved National Board Certification. That's 55,000 teachers working side-by-side with administrators and fellow colleagues, tackling the challenges in today's classrooms. Check out this website to learn about this certification and candidacy. Currently, there are 298 educators in MCPS that are Nationally Board Certified. Teacher Union Reform Network

Teacher Union Reform Network is a union-led effort to restructure the nation's teachers unions to promote reforms that will ultimately lead to better learning and higher achievement for all students. The primary goal of TURN is to create new union models that can take the lead in building and sustaining effective schools for all students.

Teaching for Change

Teaching for Change provides teachers and parents with the tools to transform schools into centers of justice where students learn to read, write and change the world. Their website is a place to go to order grat publications and find out what your national colleagues are doing in this area.
